When you're planning to go on a vacation or have to embark on a business trip, many crested gecko owners are concerned about how to look after their pets in their absence. Here are some useful tips to make sure your crested gecko stays in good health and doesn't go hungry.
How Long Can a Crested Gecko Survive Without Feeding?
If you don't want to arrange for feeding or boarding, maintaining the proper temperature is crucial. Keep the crested gecko's living environment at 22 - 26°C. Before you leave, make sure to feed your gecko until it's full. Sub - adult crested geckos can generally endure one to two weeks without food, depending on their weight. When you get back, start by offering small amounts of food multiple times. Once your gecko's digestive system adapts, you can return to its regular feeding routine.
What to Prepare to Prevent Your Gecko from Going Hungry?
- Short Absences (1 - 2 days): For a short - term absence, just feed your gecko a hearty meal beforehand and leave some fruit puree in its enclosure.
- 3 - 7 Days Away: Prepare a food bowl filled with crickets and a water bowl. You can line the water bowl with materials such as sphagnum moss or a washcloth to help retain moisture.
- 8 - 15 Days Away: Set up a food bowl and a small water - storage box (similar to a breeding box). Put in enough crickets for 3 - 5 meals. Be aware that fruit puree and fresh fruits can spoil in over a week, so use them with caution.
- Over Half a Month Away: You can create a DIY automatic water - replenishing device. Combine a water storage bucket, an infusion set, and a small water valve. Connect the outlet to the water bowl. If you have multiple crested geckos, a water - way diverter can be used. For feeding, partition the gecko's terrarium with a PVE board to create a cricket - living area. Leave small access holes so the crickets can come out for the gecko to hunt.
These methods can enhance the survival rate of your crested gecko while you're away, but they are merely emergency measures and not advisable for long - term use. A water bowl can be left in the enclosure permanently.
If you have any questions or other thoughts, feel free to leave a comment. I hope all crested geckos stay healthy and happy during your time away!
